Czech artist Filip Cenek is also visiting Rijeka, based on the cooperation with Prague-based Futura Gallery and residency program Kamov. Cenek explores hidden layers of city sounds, sounds that find their echo in the crannies of ordinary structures, or, in other words, in the concepts of temporary autonomous zones introduced in the 1980ies by Hakim Bey. The background reference idea is the controversial chapter in Rijeka’s history, during D’Annunzio’s regency of this city. Bey refers to D’Annunzio’s “state” as the “last pirate utopia”, where the central governing principle was music. By using various audio methods, Cenek plays unexpected sounds at different locations in the city centre. The installation acts like a sound vortex that questions the primacy of vision in navigation through urban landscapes.
